The Holocaust and Insurance

The mission of the International Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims (ICHEIC) is to identify, settle and pay claims of Holocaust survivors and their heirs.

The deadline for filing holocaust insurance claims was December 31, 2003.

A total of 144 claims involving Oregon residents have been filed. As of August 30, 2004:

• 19 claims have been declined because there was no insurance coverage in place at the time.
• 49 claims have been determined to be invalid because they were for unknown insurance companies.
• 17 claim payments have been made.
• 59 claims were awaiting a response from the insurance company.

In addition, ICHEIC distributed about $16 million in humanitarian payments to Holocaust survivors and their heirs in 60 countries in March 2004. Sixteen Oregon residents received the $1,000 payments.
