Booklet helps consumers save money on auto insurance

Consumers may be able to save money by shopping around for auto insurance, according to a survey by the Oregon Insurance Division.

In the survey, major insurance companies were asked to provide rate quotes for typical drivers in various Oregon cities. Rates varied widely among the 27 companies responding to the survey. For example, the six-month premium for a typical Bend family with a teenage son ranged from $301 to $984.

Survey results are included in the Insurance Division's free booklet, Consumer Guide to Auto Insurance. The booklet also includes tips consumers can use to save money on auto insurance, plus information on consumer rights and how to file a claim.

The best way to cut your insurance costs is to maintain a good driving record, since drivers with clean records receive the lowest rates. Another way to save money is to ask your insurance agent or company if you qualify for any discounts. For example, you may get a discount if your daughter has good grades or has completed a driver education course, or your car has air bags or other safety equipment.

To receive a free copy of the booklet, write to: Publications, Oregon Insurance Division, 350 Winter St. NE, Salem, OR 97301-3883. The booklet also is available on the division's Web site: www.cbs.state.or.us/ins or www.oregoninsurance.org.
